Dear Parents,

Welcome back to the 2008-2009 school year.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful summer vacation.  I know that I sure did and I am now excited about the new school year.  New teachers, new grade levels and new friends all make a new school year exciting, not only for the children, but also for the teachers and administration.  We all anticipate a great year and welcome everyone back to Marquez.

A few changes mark the beginning of this year. We welcome some new teachers to Marquez, Ms. Arevelo and Ms Hain in kindergarten and Ms. Buckner and Ms. Abrams in 2nd grade.  Bell schedules will continue to be the same with school beginning promptly at 8:15 with dismissal at 3:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 1:50 on Tuesday and Thursday.

As a friendly reminder, we encourage everyone to use the carpool drop off lane in the appropriate manner and also expect that everyone that can carpool, to please make arrangements now in order for us to reduce the number of cars dropping children off. In order to reduce congestion, we recommend parents with children in grades 3-5 to drop their children off between 7:50 and 8:00 and parents of children in grades 1 and 2 to drop children off between 8:05 and 8:10.  If you have a span of children, please arrive at the earlier time to avoid the congestion in front of the school.  Please take the time to review the traffic plan that is enclosed with this packet.  It is extremely important that we reduce the number of vehicles currently impacting the surrounding neighborhood, so please try to carpool whenever possible, or get active and walk to school if you can.

Right now I’d like everyone to log onto www.marquezcharter.org and register to receive the newsletters and important emails.  It is our way to keep you informed and to reduce the amount of paperwork we send home.  You also need to log on right now to find out what time your grade level orientation is taking place.  These important meetings will be held over the next two weeks.  Thinking about volunteering this year?  Check out the “volunteer needed” section of the website which will be updated periodically throughout the year.

Parents, please pay particular attention to the check list, there are numerous items that will need to be signed and returned to your child’s teacher. Please use the checklist to help you organize your materials and to be sure that you return everything by Friday, September 5, 2008.

In addition to everything already mentioned, please consider joining PTA and  don’t forget to support the Circle of Giving Campaign from Friends of Marquez. Without these organizations and their financial strength, Marquez would not be able to have such a wonderful program.  It is with great anticipation that I extend my welcome back wishes to everyone.  I trust that this will be another awesome year for Marquez and I feel privileged to be a part of this incredible community.  If you have any questions, please feel free to drop in or email me at phollis@lausd.net.
