PTA

2008-2009 Marquez Org Chart

The Marquez Parent Teacher Association, a member of the tenth District PTA, promotes the education, health and welfare of our children.

PTA is the largest grassroots child advocacy organization in the world. The PTA generally meets together with Friends of Marquez on the third Thursday of each month while school is in session. The PTA membership drive takes place in the fall. We encourage all families to join. The funds we raise help support the following programs:

  • Emergency Shed – fully stocked with food, water, first aid supplies needed in the event of an emergency
  • Campus Security
  • Marquez T-shirts for students to wear during field trips to increase safety and visibility
  • Fund the Quiet Center with games and art supplies so that children have an quiet alternative during lunch
  • Sponsor the annual Science Fair
  • Educational assemblies
  • Parent Education series with a rotating roster of speakers
  • Co-host new parent orientations and prospective parent tours
  • Sponsor Paul Revere night for parents to learn about our complex middle school
  • Purchased a school-wide radio communication system
  • Provide new teachers with funds to start up their classroom
  • CPR Training for teachers
  • Recognize teachers during National Teacher Appreciation Week
  • Provide additional lighting outside of school

The main PTA fundraiser is the Walk-a-Thon held in the spring and combines fundraising with physical fitness. Children are sponsored as they walk or run around the track on the lower playground. The PTA also sells Marquez t-shirts and sweatshirts throughout the school year. I’d love to volunteer. How do I get started?

Sign up to volunteer at orientation or Back-to-School night. If you can’t volunteer your time, maybe you can volunteer your own or your company’s services! Contact PTA President Rebecca Aghalarpour  (310-459-9320)  and let her know the areas in which you are interested and they will be sure to put your talents to use.

There are many volunteer activities available at Marquez. Parents sign up at the beginning of the school year. Some of the areas are listed below:

  • Classroom volunteers can assist the teacher for an hour or two each week in the classroom, tutor an individual child on a regular basis or prepare materials at home for classroom use.
  • Room Parents organize special class events and holiday parties, drive on field trips, participate in class telephone trees and assist with Friends of Marquez fundraising.
  • The Halloween Festival Committee plans the fall festival which includes food, game booths, rides and a haunted house.
  • The Volunteer Outreach Program recruits and organizes parent volunteers for various activities throughout the year.
  • The Playground Landscape Committee coordinates campus beautification.
  • The Traffic Safety Committee organizes the traffic safety volunteers who assist with the morning and afternoon flow of traffic in front of school.
  • The Walk-a-Thon Committee organizes this fun fundraiser during which children walk and run around a track on the lower yard.
  • The Parent Technology Committee facilitates the implementation of the Marquez Technology Program and advises the Teacher Technology Committee regarding opportunities to develop and grow.
  • Enrichment Liaisons are individuals who coordinate our art, music, drama, computer, library and physical education enrichment programs. Parents assist enrichment teachers with ordering supplies, organizing volunteers and special events, such as the Holiday Program and Talent Show.

The Marquez PTA Classroom Donation Fund

LAUSD provides approximately $16,500 to Marquez for supplies each year. After $8,000 for the copier lease and maintenance, that leaves less than $12 per student per year for teachers to buy paper, chalk, pencils, crayons, journals, etc. Your donation to this fund allows our teachers to pay for field trips and buy needed supplies for special projects in art, cooking, computer discs, batteries for cameras, photo paper etc. The fund is managed by the PTA and overseen by Principal Hollis. Teachers are reimbursed upon presenting receipts.
