Circle of Giving

This is our most important fundraising campaign.

As a charter school, at Marquez, we have the amazing ability to enrich the standard LAUSD base level of education, with programs funded and supported by our parent-run Friends of Marquez.  These programs – ranging from the hiring of additional teachers to reduce class sizes to Marquez’s exceptional laptop program – are critical elements that provide the students of Marquez with an education comparable to that of private schools, which can cost upward of $20,000 per year.

Consider what Marquez would look like without Friends of Marquez’s financial contribution, which accounts for two-thirds of the school’s operating budget:

Typical LAUSD School
  • 39 Students in 4th & 5th Grade
  • Small, shared computer lab
  • P.E. provided by classroom teachers
  • No enrichment programs or half-size class reduction
  • No classroom aides
Instead, Marquez students benefit from:
  • 24 students in all grades (2 additional teachers)
  • 1 laptop for every 2 students (grades 1 – 5); computers in kindergarten classes
  • P.E. program with dedicated staff
  • Science, Art, Music, Edible Garden and other programs provided by dedicated staff, including 2 credentialed teachers
  • At least 1 hour/day of aides in every class and full-time aides in kindergarten classes

The total cost of operating these programs is about $850 per child, above and beyond the funds provided by the State and LAUSD.  Without these programs, Marquez would be just another LAUSD elementary school, and not the special place it is – where our children are nurtured through a variety of programs that enhance their learning experience.  Through the generosity of parents like you, Circle of Giving (our annual direct fundraising drive) raises approximately 70% of the Friends of Marquez annual budget.

California’s budget crisis and the resulting reduction in funding for education have made it more critical than ever to make a contribution to Circle of Giving. It is up to each of us to do what we can to continue to support the outstanding Marquez learning experience.

Circle of Giving has many levels of participation to choose from, but our suggested minimum is $850 per student – the amount that Friends of Marquez actually SPENDS on each student, each year.  Remember, a donation of $850 translates to less than $5.00 PER SCHOOL DAY, per student, to make a critical difference in your child’s education.

We absolutely respect that every family has a unique financial situation, particularly in this economy.  Please donate what is meaningful, and possible, for your family.

There are many ways to contribute to Circle of Giving:

  • Checks, either in full or in three payments throughout the school year
  • Credit card (Visa or MasterCard), either in full or in three payments
  • Gifts/transfer of stock

We also will work with you if your employer participates in matching gift programs.

This year, we are truly hoping to see our entire community come together in support of the Circle of Giving Campaign.  In order to succeed, we must increase participation in Circle of Giving, as we expect LAUSD will see declining state funding in the coming months and years.  The time is NOW to invest in our children’s education.  As always, we thank you for your ongoing support!
