Happenings at Marquez

Wow, there is always so much going on around Marquez! Can you believe it is October already? Last month Ms. Bamesberger, our incredible kindergarten teacher, welcomed her first child, a baby girl, Jensen. We all congratulate her and wish her and her family all the best.

Volunteer Opportunity

Do you have an hour you can volunteer each week on a regular basis in order to make a difference in a child’s life? We are actively seeking volunteers for our CATCH (Caring Adults Teaching Children How) program. This program was started last year at Marquez and is designed to give special attention and one to one mentoring for students in grades 3 through 5. We ask that a volunteer commit to a day and time each week during school hours. We need at least 40 volunteers at this time and want to begin pairing students with their mentors within a couple of weeks. This is such a valuable addition to the Marquez program. It is extremely rewarding and especially targets individual students and their needs. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, I urge you to contact your governing board representative and CATCH coordinator, Helene Dameris at hdameris@swbell.net, (310) 454-9819 or call me at school at (310) 454-4019 or email. Please consider volunteering, the students really need someone like you.

Wrap it Up, Please!

Our Innisbrook gift wrap fund raiser is up and running. This year we are asking you to take orders as usual on your order forms found in the sales packet with the catalog. Please do not collect sales tax. Our school is not being charged tax. Once you have the order, go to innisbrook.com and go to the EZ Order Entry icon and enter our school code 103031 and follow the directions to place your order. You can enter your sales at the EZ Order Entry system on an ongoing basis. When you finish placing your order, please make sure you print out the voucher and return it to school by October 13 along with the money you have collected. All the online orders will be shipped to the school. At any time you can call Innisbrook at 877-525-5608 or contact our parent rep robinaronson@adelphia.net. Please note that orders placed through the “Shop” icon will be subject to tax and shipping costs and these orders will be delivered to your home. Additionally, you will need to pay online with your credit card if you order in this manner.

YEE HAW!!

Palisades Elementary is opening its gates to the community for its 6th annual Yee Haw Day Western Fair on Saturday, October 18 from 2-5 p.m. Everyone is welcome. There will be all sorts of games and prizes for kids of all ages as well as a Chili Cookoff, Sweet Vittle Bakes, ale and obstacle courses. Back by popular demand will be the BBQ smokehouse. If you stay until 6 p.m. you can enjoy the Grand New American Idol Opry for lots of laughs and great fun too.

Lost and Found

Are you missing a jacket or sweater? Maybe a lunchbox. Be sure to check the lost and found coat rack behind the library in the main courtyard. You can help prevent items from being lost by writing your child’s name on the collar tag or other location.

Friday Ice Cream Treats

Last June at a Friends of Marquez meeting, we decided to sell Dreyer’s all natural ice cream as a treat on Friday afternoon. Now that we have sold it a couple of times and worked out a system, please know that if there are no other sales on a Friday, or if the weather is particularly warm such as Wednesday of this week, we will be selling ice cream treats. The cost is from $1 to $3 depending on the treat. Any monies made during these sales will go directly into the Student Body account to be used for school-wide assemblies.

Party Packs

Don’t forget the Party Pack that is available for you to use. The party pack contains enough glasses, plates, utensils and napkins for a classroom party. All you have to do is reserve it, pick it up and return it all cleaned up. Get used to it now because in the near future you won’t be able to have a party without it. Marquez is reducing, reusing and recycling as much as we can. You can call Jody Norris at (310) 573-4171 to reserve the Party Pack.

National Walk to School Month

October is National Walk to School month. Marquez is going to plan a large event sometime later in the month so look for more information to be coming your way soon. If you can walk to school, then this is the month to do it.
As always, you can reach me at phollis@lausd.net
