First Student Assembly

Next week will mark our very first student recognition assembly  This assembly occurs roughly every six weeks.  Students will be nominated by their classroom teachers in the areas of citizenship, effort and achievement.  If your child is nominated you will receive an invitation  to attend the assembly which will be held on Wednesday, October 15 at 8:40 a.m. for kindergarten and on Friday, October 17 for 1st -5th grade. (1st grade - 1:05 p.m., 2nd grade - 8:45, 3rd grade - 9:55, 4th grade 10:20; 5th grade 11:55).  During these assemblies, I talk about my expectations for the children, I talk about the Big Six Principles, and I use many anecdotes to help promote the pillars of character (trust, respect, caring, responsibility, fairness, courage).  It is a fun assembly and anyone interested may attend.

A Sad Farewell

It is with a heartfelt thank you that we bid farewell to Ms. Powell, one of our most excellent 1st grade teachers.  Ms. Powell has been with Marquez for a number of years and is moving on to San Diego.  We will certainly miss her and wish her family well in this new adventure.  I am pleased to introduce Ms. Lindy Bazan who will join the Marquez team on Monday, October 13.  Ms. Bazan comes to us with years of experience at 42nd Street School.  Ms Powell will remain at Marquez until Thursday, October 16 to make sure that we have a smooth transition between the two teachers.  Please make sure you get a chance to say thank you to Ms. Powell and to welcome Ms. Bazan.

Gift Wraps News

Gift wrap orders are due this Monday, October 13.  If anyone is having problems with the EZ ordering on the Internet, they can always hand in a copy of their form and checks into the office and we will enter it for them.  So far we have had quite a few raffle winners.  Each time a student sold 6 items they were able to fill out a raffle card and and put it into the box in the office for a chance to win.  We congratulate Cole Farrell, Grace Winters, Matthew Webber, Randy Barillas, Kevin Iacopino, Maxwell McClung, Riley Tardio, Baily Kirshner, Kathy VanMiddlesworth, Ryan Breitman, Sierra Somkin, Kyla Kirshner, Ally Bierschenk, Benjamin Taylor, Blake White and David Leitz.  Thank you to everyone who has purchased wrapping paper.  The money raised goes directly into programs to benefit all students.

Volunteer Breakfast

The children are settled into their classes and most of the paperwork is behind you.  So now it is time to gain the momentum and turn all of your energy into volunteering.  There are many ways to volunteer.  In fact, on Monday, October 13th at 8:30 in the morning you are invited to the Breakfast Nosh where you can learn how you can get involved with Marquez.  This meeting is for anyone interested in volunteering in any capacity will take place in the staff lounge.  We need volunteers for specific events as well as for year-long opportunities in the art room as well as in the CATCH (mentoring) program.  Please take time to consider what you might want to do and drop in for some coffee.  For those new to the school and the area, it is a great way to become more familiar with the school and to meet some new friends.

Paul Revere Back to School Night

Paul Revere will be hosting their Back to School Night on Thursday, October 16. We have planned so that Thursday, October 23rd, parents of 5th graders can go on a tour of Paul Revere at 9 a.m. and then at 7 p.m. they can meet the principal and counselors of Paul Revere right here in our own auditorium.  Parents of 5th grade students should jot this on their calendars and be sure not to miss this opportunity.

Governing Board Meeting

Next Thursday, October 16 will be the next Governing Board meeting.  We will hear from the various committees, confirm committee members, discuss the garden and greening program as well as to hear a proposal regarding the Friends of Friends fundraising.  Everyone is cordially invited to attend.

As always, you can reach me at phollis@lausd.net
