Regular School Day – This Friday!
Friday, May 15 will be a regularly scheduled day after all. On Tuesday, a Los Angeles Judge declared the job action of UTLA to be illegal. UTLA has agreed to have teachers report to work on Friday for a regular school day. Teachers will picket at the front of the school in the morning just before school starts. School will be dismissed at 3:00. Please bring your child to school on Friday, May 15!!
School Survey
Don’t forget to turn in your survey that was included in the budget packet sent home on Monday. It is very important to me. I want to hear what you are thinking and what your suggestions might be for the upcoming school year. These surveys are due on Thursday, May 14 in the main office.
Pearl Dragon Thanks!
Marquez filled Pearl Dragon last week—it seemed that every family in the restaurant was from Marquez, a really fun event. These events will be ongoing, every few weeks, at various Palisades restaurants. A nice way to support our community, while they support Marquez. The next Marquez Night is coming up: Tuesday, May 19, at Vittorio’s. I expect to see an awful lot of left over pizza being brought for lunch on Wednesday the 20th. Let’s pack Vittorio’s.
PTA Walk-a-Thon
The PTA Walk-a-thon is coming up on Friday, May 29th. Please be sure to sign and return the Parent Release Form and your child’s Walk-a-thon envelope with pledges to your classroom teacher or the office. Please join your child’s class for the big day and cheer them on while they help raise money for the Marquez PTA. This organization deals strictly with student health and safety. They were instrumental in funding the security fence and the installation of all the locks on the perimeter of Marquez, not to mention the “best kept emergency shed in the City of Los Angeles”. This organization contributes to a fund that supplies quality health care for students in need throughout Los Angeles. Finally, Marquez teachers and students benefit from the additional classroom materials fund that is supplied by the PTA. Please help support this organization and return your Walk-a-thon envelopes. Thanks to Rebecca Aghalarpour for leading the PTA this year.
Marquez Girl Scouts
The Marquez Girl Scouts are conducting a “pet supply” collection to benefit local shelters. They have conveniently placed boxes in front of the school. They are asking for gently-used blankets as well as other pet supplies or food. This is a community service badge they are working on and it is for a great cause—anyone who brings their dogs in the morning has been witness to my weakness for dogs. I wish the girl scouts tons of success.
Gelson’s Scrip
Our final Gelson’s scrip (gift card) order for the year is coming up in June. If you shop at Gelson’s you can support Marquez through the scrip program. Go ahead and load up on scrip for the lazy days of summer. It is simple and fast to sign you up. The form is on the Marquez website under fundraising. Otherwise, you can contact Daniela Winter at (310) 454-3655 or at ddw64@roadrunner.com no later than Monday, June 1st. Thanks.
Help the Marquez Garden
Interested in keeping the Marquez garden initiative going? There will be a meeting of great minds and people interested in the greening of Marquez on Wednesday, May 20 at 3:00 p.m. If you are interested in attending please come to this meeting to be held in the Marquez library.
Jr. Fire Chief for a Day Contest
Does your child have an inner desire to be a fire chief? The Los Angeles County Fire Department is conducting a poster contest in observance of the 18th Annual “Jr. Fire Chief for a Day” contest. The theme of the contest is “Visit a Local Professional Fireworks Show”. The goal is to encourage everyone to enjoy a safe holiday celebration by attending a professional show rather than using home-use fireworks. Six prize winners will be chosen from all the entries. Work must be submitted by June 3, 2009. Work must be poster size 12″x18″ using ink, crayon, pencil, acrylic, water color or tempura. No computer generated work will be accepted. For official rules and entry forms, please come to the office.
Special Congrats
Congratulations to Kevin Headrick and Alok Elashoff who were winners at the Arner Winter Scholasitic chess tournament at Warner Elementary school in Westwood on February 7th this year.
