Principal’s Message

Principal Emily Williams at her deskDear Marquez Families,

What a great first week back to school. Thank you to Mrs. Lew’s class for being on top of the carpool lane and ensuring a safe return to school in the mornings. Please remember in the morning, to pull as far forward as possible before letting your child out … even if you are running a little behind schedule. After school, the carpool lane is also meant to be a moving line of traffic. The pick up area after school is at the lower yard gate. Please DO NOT leave your car, but always pull forward when space is available. If your child is taking a long time to arrive to your car, exit the carpool lane, park legally and walk to school.

PCH Fires
We’d like to thank you for your patience on Tuesday and Wednesday when commutes became far too long as a result of the traffic restrictions and diversions on our local roads. Although Marquez was in no danger due to the fires, parents please make sure the school office has your current primary email address, home telephone, and cell phone numbers. In cases of emergency the numbers you provide are used to contact you and keep you informed.

The grass is gorgeous, well almost. There is one patch that hasn’t taken so well, and the LAUSD gardening team has asked that we restrict access to this area for a few more weeks. Stay tuned to an update on when we can take down the fences.

Surveyors Abound
This week you many have noticed LAUSD’s surveyors on campus. They are conducting a topographical survey of the upper yard to create a map outlining water flow, paths of travel, etc. to best position the replacement bungalows for the Spring. LAUSD will hold a community meeting in due course to share with parents the outcome and plans. Please attend.

Dress Code
We ask that all parents, teachers, and staff lead by example and respect the dress and footwear code that we are asking the children to adhere to.
1. Shorts, skirts, and pants must be appropriately sized, (e.g. no short shorts or overly baggy shorts or pants that sag from the waist.)
2. Straps are required on dresses and tops: 1 inch straps.
3. Closed-toe shoes or tennis shoes are preferred, especially for Physical Education.
4. Items worn expressing profane or obscene messages, or promoting the use of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco are prohibited.

Green Team
We ask parents to support their children in continuing to develop respectful and responsible ‘green’ habits by reminding your children to pick up their trash and place their trash and recyclables in the proper containers. Every day is Earth Day!

Annual Auctionauctionlogo_2014

Save the date: March 8, 2014 – book your sitter! All parents, teachers and the Principal are invited. Tickets will be released for sale in the near future.

Solicit donations! Every child was sent home with two solicitation letters and forms. Please get great donations as soon as possible and submit them as per the instructions on the form. Extra forms available! We appreciate if every family could solicit or donate at least two items each. No item is too small, nor too large.

Teacher auction bids will be going home with students on February 24 and will be due on March 5. This is a great opportunity for your child to spend some one on one time with their teacher in a fun activity. Past activities have included the trips to pier, movies, picnics and dinners. Keep an eye out for the envelope and bid!

Thanks to our generous Marquez families who donated in 2013, we are grateful to start 2014 at 61% participation. Our goal is 100% participation. Those families who waited to contribute until the new year, kindly make your donation online, or drop a check with your child(ren)’s name and room number in the wooden COG box in the office. For stock transfers or any questions, please contact us by email.

Creation Stationcreationstation-5320

Let’s get our creative juices flowing this New Year! The Creation Station is an area of arts-n-crafts, legos, toy cars, and games that are available during recess for the children who want a quieter activity. Our goal is to have it open every M/W/F during recess, and it is staffed 100% by parent volunteers. Each day it is open requires two adult volunteers, there are dozens and dozens of children there at once. If you are interested in participating please email Bren Boston or Leah Herndon.

This month’s donation request: board games that can be played in less than 20 minutes and have contained pieces. (Think “travel” games.)

The READ-A-THON ends Friday, January 24: Only 1 more week to read as many books as you can. Keep writing your books down on your reading logs (0-50 pages=1book, 51-100 pages=2 books, 101-150 pages =3books, and so on). Also go out and collect pledges to help support FOM and all the extracurricular activities like the Media Center that FOM funds. A suggested donation of $1 per book with a goal of each student finding 10 sponsors and reading 10 (or more) books—which is about $100 per student. Parents, please make sure that your child’s reading log is legible to ensure that they receive credit for the books that they read. Every Friday that your child turned in their reading log, they earned a raffle ticket (we have all raffle tickets) for a chance to win a $20 book store gift certificate. Each student that turns in their reading log receives a certificate and, if they read 10 or more books, they will receive a medal. Also, the class per grade that reads the most books wins an ice cream party. Your child must turn in their reading log to their teacher on January 24. Pledges can be turned in to their teacher or to the Read-A-Thon envelope in the office till February 7. Please make sure your child’s name and room number are on the envelope your pledges are in. Any questions email Amy and Ronna.
